Using Travel Forums for Online Travel Marketing
Have you followed along the last few days as I wrote about blogging for links?
For those of you that missed this lesson, find the links at the end of this post. For those of you following along faithfully, today’s lesson is short, because you know the concepts, you just to need to know where to go to do it.
Posting in forums with a good well crafted signature line can gain you some Search Engine Exposure. There are many active forums out there for you to choose from and they are fairly easy to find.
Forums are also very popular for travellers; they provide valuable research and answer many question travelers have about the destination or the activities. Posting in forums can put your travel options in front of many potential clients.
Before posting… make sure you have a signature line for your post that will be both traveler and search engine friendly. A signature line is the sign-off for your post that indicates who and what you are. This is an example of a basic signature:

Signature lines can differ from forum to forum, some offer limited text with no linking capabilities, others offer full html control. If you have the html control, be sure to add your keywords into the linking text. In that case it could look like this,

As you can see from the above examples, it is possible to craft a signature line to fit the forum you are posting to. If the forum I was posting to was specific to lodging, I might use the first example, if it is specific to activities, I might use the second. As with blogs, read the forum, understand who is reading it and tailor your signature file to entice the reader.
Finding forums to post to is fairly easy. TripAdvisor and Virtual Tourist are 2 of the biggest, but try typing your business type and the word FORUM into a search engine and you will have numerous forums to choose from.
As for the nofollow rules that we speak of here, I would worry less about that for travel forums, as they are well read by travellers and gaining a link is good, but getting your website in front of potential visitors researching a destination is better.
Here are a few recent posts about nofollow, blogs and linking that you may have missed that provide more information about posting for links.
